GREAT OCEAN WALK

Great Ocean Walk | Ryan's Den to Devils Kitchen

Ryan's Den to Devils Kitchen

"plan to walk at low tide, wreck beach is amazing"

Trip Notes Ryan's Den to Devils Kitchen.

This is the wildest and probably the most challenging section of the track to walk. From Ryans Den the track continues through coastal forests that lead over Cape Volney to the evocatively named (by Matthew Flinders during a break in showery weather at night in April 1802) Moonlight Head.

After Moonlight Head the track dips down into a valley and follows a newly cut section of track which will lead to The Gables Lookout, perched on one of the highest sea cliffs in mainland Australia. If you are walking in June – September you may be lucky enough to see one of the departing Southern Right Whales which frequent this coast in the winter months.

Continuing along the track through a grove of casuarina trees you will come out near Wreck Beach where at low tide you can descend and see the anchors of two of the many shipwrecks that lie submerged along this coast (The Fiji and the Marie Gabrielle). If the tide is low you can take this route and walk to Devils Kitchen from Wreck Beach, otherwise take the new high tide route from the Wreck Beach Carpark to Devils Kitchen.
